This course consists of one nationally recognised unit: RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely and follow work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures in the resources and infrastructure industries.

It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of own work outcomes.

Upon successful completion of Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures Training, students will be able to:

  • Access and Apply Site Safety Procedures: Understand and follow the workplace’s safety policies, procedures, and permits to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Apply Personal Safety Measures: Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices to protect yourself from hazards.
  • Apply Operational Safety Measures: Implement safety protocols during operational tasks to reduce risks to yourself and others.
  • Maintain Personal Wellbeing: Manage fatigue, stress, and overall health to perform work safely and effectively.
  • Identify and Report Incidents: Recognise hazards, near misses, and incidents, and report them accurately to maintain workplace safety.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Work Safely and Follow WHS Policies and Procedures Training, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
  • Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.
Student Responsibilities and Practical Requirements
  • Access to technology: Reliable internet connection, a computer or device capable of running the training software, and basic skills to operate these technologies (e.g., using a web browser, downloading/uploading files, participating in virtual meetings).
  • Self-motivation and time management: Ability to manage learning schedules independently, meet deadlines, and engage actively without in-person supervision.
  • Basic communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal means, including using email, chat tools, or discussion forums.

Students can enrol directly into Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures Training without needing to complete any prior vocational qualifications.

Mode of Delivery

This unit is delivered through a combination of online self-paced learning and practical workplace application, ensuring students can engage with theoretical content remotely and apply their skills in real-world scenarios. The online component includes interactive modules, readings, and assessments accessible via our Learning Management System (LMS), allowing students to progress at their own pace while adhering to course timeline.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements.

Assessment methods include:

  • Written Responses to Theory Questions: Students will complete theory-based questions within the Learning Management System (LMS) learning plans, demonstrating their understanding of safe work practices, WHS policies and procedures, hazard identification, and risk control measures.

  • Portfolio of Work Samples: Students will compile a portfolio containing evidence of workplace practices, such as completed Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), hazard identification reports, records of safe work procedures, and documentation demonstrating compliance with WHS policies and procedures, showcasing their practical application of safe work practices in operational environments.

  • Verbal Questioning: Conducted to assess students’ ability to communicate risk management concepts and procedures clearly and concisely, ensuring they can engage effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

  • Combination of the Above: A holistic approach combining written, verbal, and applied assessments to ensure students can safely, effectively, and efficiently implement safe work practices in the workplace.
