This training course consists of one nationally recognised unit: RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply risk management processes in the mining, drilling and civil infrastructure industry.

This unit applies to individuals who contribute to applying risk management processes as part of their responsibilities. This could be an employer, line manager, supervisor, safety representative or employee. This unit applies to those who carry out or assist in carrying out risk assessment in the workplace.

Upon successful completion of Apply Risk Management Processes Training, students will be able to:

  • Plan and Prepare for Risk Management: Gather relevant information, resources, and documentation to effectively plan and prepare for workplace risk management activities.
  • Identify and Assess Unacceptable Risk: Recognise hazards and assess risks to determine which are unacceptable and require action.
  • Identify and Recommend Risk Controls: Analyse risks and propose appropriate control measures to reduce or eliminate hazards.
  • Contribute to the Implementation of Risk Controls: Assist in putting risk control measures into practice, ensuring they are effective and followed by all personnel.
  • Review Risk Management Documentation: Evaluate and maintain risk management records to ensure they are accurate, up to date, and compliant with organisational and industry requirements.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Apply Risk Management Processes Training, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
  • Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.

  • Access to technology: Reliable internet connection, a computer or device capable of running the training software, and basic skills to operate these technologies (e.g., using a web browser, downloading/uploading files, participating in virtual meetings).
  • Self-motivation and time management: Ability to manage learning schedules independently, meet deadlines, and engage actively without in-person supervision.
  • Basic communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal means, including using email, chat tools, or discussion forums.

Students can enrol directly into Apply Risk Management Processes Training without needing to complete any prior vocational qualifications.

Mode of Delivery

This unit is delivered through a combination of online self-paced learning and practical workplace application, ensuring students can engage with theoretical content remotely and apply their skills in real-world scenarios. The online component includes interactive modules, readings, and assessments accessible via our Learning Management System (LMS), allowing students to progress at their own pace while adhering to course timeline.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements.

Assessment methods include:

  • Written Responses to Theory Questions: Students will complete theory-based questions within the learning plans in Learning Management System (LMS), demonstrating their understanding of risk management principles and procedures.

  • Portfolio of Work Samples: Students will compile a portfolio containing evidence of completed workplace documents, such as risk assessments, hazard identification reports, and risk control plans, showcasing their practical application of risk management processes.

  • Verbal Questioning: Conducted to assess students’ ability to communicate risk management concepts and procedures clearly and concisely, ensuring they can engage effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

  • Combination of the Above: A holistic approach combining written, verbal, and applied assessments to ensure students can safely, effectively, and efficiently apply risk management processes in the workplace.
