RIICOM201E Communicate in the Workplace is a nationally recognised unit of competency designed for individuals working in the resources and infrastructure industries.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate in the workplace in the resources and infrastructure industries and other industries with relevant work practices and procedures.

It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of own work outcomes.

This course is comprised of one unit of competency RIICOM201E Communicate in the Workplace, delivered and assessed to ensure students master the essential communication skills required in the workplace.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for workplace communication using equipment and systems. Identify communication needs within the workplace and select appropriate equipment and systems to meet those needs. Understand how to set up and use communication tools safely and effectively, following all relevant procedures to ensure smooth and reliable information flow.
  • Communicate effectively using communication systems. Develop skills to confidently operate communication devices such as radios and phones. Know how to send, receive, and respond to messages clearly, choosing the right communication methods for different situations while adhering to workplace protocols, including emergency communication procedures.
  • Carry out effective face-to-face communication. Build confidence in speaking clearly and listening actively to others. Practice confirming understanding through questioning and feedback, and use approved non-verbal signals and gestures to support clear and respectful communication within teams.
  • Complete clear written documentation. Accurately complete workplace documents like forms, checklists, and reports. Understand the importance of clear and concise written communication and how to distribute written information appropriately to support workplace operations.
Entry Requirements

To enrol in the RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace course, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
  • Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.
Student Responsibilities and Practical Requirements
  • Access to technology: Reliable internet connection, a computer or device capable of running the training software, and basic skills to operate these technologies (e.g., using a web browser, downloading/uploading files, participating in virtual meetings).
  • Self-motivation and time management: Ability to manage learning schedules independently, meet deadlines, and engage actively without in-person supervision.
  • Basic communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal means, including using email, chat tools, or discussion forums.

RIICOM201E Communicate in the Workplace course does not have any licensing, legislative or certification requirements.

Students can enrol directly without needing to complete any prior vocational qualifications.

 

Mode of Delivery

This unit is delivered through a combination of online self-paced learning and practical workplace application, ensuring students can engage with theoretical content remotely and apply their skills in real-world scenarios. The online component includes interactive modules, readings, and assessments accessible via our Learning Management System (LMS), allowing students to progress at their own pace while adhering to course timeline.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements.

Assessment methods include:

  • Written Responses to Theory Questions:
    Learners will complete theory-based questions within the Learning Management System (LMS) that assess their understanding of effective workplace communication principles, protocols, and procedures.
  • Portfolio of Work Samples:
    Learners will compile a portfolio including samples of workplace communication documents such as reports, checklists, messages, and logs, demonstrating practical application of communication skills in a workplace setting.
  • Verbal Questioning:
    Verbal assessments will evaluate learners’ ability to clearly and accurately communicate information, respond to questions, and engage effectively with colleagues and supervisors in a variety of workplace scenarios.
  • Combination of the Above:
    A blended assessment approach will be used, incorporating written, verbal, and practical tasks to ensure learners can communicate safely, clearly, and efficiently in workplace environments.
