Course Summary

This course is designed to provide the student with the skills and knowledge required to respond to urban fires effectively, conduct fire teams operations and respond to local emergencies and incidents.  

This course will involve the skills and knowledge that are necessary in order to work as part of a firefighting team under direct or limited supervision when responding to urban fires. It includes proceeding and responding to fires and determining and preparing extinguishing media and equipment for use, entering a structure, conducting search and rescues and combatting fires. 

It also includes the skills and knowledge required to respond to a range of local emergencies and incidents. It covers implementing  response plans, monitoring the situation, taking necessary precautionary measures, and supporting formal relief.

 

 

Learning Outcomes

The Introduction to Industrial Fire Suppression course involves 3 units of competency and these are delivered and assessed in sequence to satisfy pre-requisite requirements. The first unit to be delivered is: 

PUAFIR203 Respond to Urban Fire  

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to respond to an urban fire where offensive and defensive strategies are used.  

The unit applies to firefighting personnel who work as a member of a team, under direct supervision. Work at this level is undertaken under direct supervision, and with instruction.  

  • Proceed to fire 
  • Prepare extinguishing media and / or equipment for use 
  • Enter the structure  
  • Conduct search and rescue  
  • Combat fires 
  • Observe and react to changes in conditions and behaviour 
  • Participate in ancillary operations 
  • Conclude firefighting operations  

RIIERR201E Conduct Fire Team Operations 

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct fire team operations, including fighting and containing fires.  

This unit applies to those working in site-based roles in the coal mining, metalliferous mining, drilling, extractive, and civil infrastructure environments.  

  • Prepare for fire team operations 
  • Fight to contain fire 
  • Complete fire team operations 
  • Audit firefighting installations  

RIIERR302E Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents  

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond to a range of local emergencies and incidents. It includes implementing response plans, monitoring the situation, taking necessary precautionary measures, and supporting formal relief.  

This unit applies to those working in site-based roles in the coal mining, metalliferous mining, drilling, extractive, and civil infrastructure environments. 

  • Prepare to respond to a local emergency or incident 
  • Respond to a local emergency or incident 
  • Support formal relief and debrief  

Unit PUAFIR207 Operate Breathing Apparatus Open Circuit and Unit PUAFIR210 Prevent Injury are both pre-requisites for Unit PUAFIR203 Respond to Urban Fire. It is essential that both pre-requisite units listed above are obtained prior to the issuance of this unit to any student within the fire sector or the units contributing to the attainments of a fire qualification.  

This course is delivered through classroom presentations, group discussions, practical demonstrations and practical exercises. Students will be required to demonstrate their competence in both written and practical assessments. 

Students who attend and successfully complete and meet all assessment requirements of this course will receive a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for the following units:  

PUAFIR203 Respond to Urban Fire  

RIIERR201E Conduct Fire Team Operations 

RIIERR302E Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents 

 

A government issued photo identification and valid USI is required for course registration. 

All students must undertake a language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy test before commencement of this course to ascertain if support is required to assist you into successfully meeting your goals.  

Students must also possess the following: 

  • Approximately 12 months Industry Experience
  • Possess a Laptop/Tablet which they are able to bring with them on training days
  • Be physically fit and able to carry a minimum of 20kgs in weight 
  • Be clean shaven as per AS1715
  • Can climb stairs and ladders whilst carrying a load 
  • Be able to manage feelings associated with claustrophobia  
  • Can manage the mental and physical effects of a fear of heights 
  • Communicate in a clear manner with others 
  • Read and Record measurements  
  • Record information legibly  
  • Read and comply with work instructions and specifications  
  • Complete a health and fitness declaration. Please note that students are required to declare any medical issue(s) that may prevent or exclude them from full participation of all units 
  • The physical capacity to undertake the practical components with this course.  
  • Wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, safety boots and safety glasses on face-to-face training days
