Course Summary
This course is designed for those who are required to conduct gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific space area or workspace. This course applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere within the workplace.
Each participant must have the ability to interpret readings and take appropriate action based on the readings in order to be fully competent. This course is recommended for those working within environments such as hot works, confined space, enclosed and partially enclosed spaces, storage tanks, pits, silos, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships. It also applies to those who may be required to conduct tests as part of issuing a work permit, monitoring as part of working under a work permit and open areas, lowering a gas tester into a space, or holding a gas tester by hand.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, students should be able to:

- Maintain Equipment
This course is delivered through classroom presentation, participant discussion and practical exercises. Students will demonstrate their competence through written and practical assessment.
Students who attend and successfully complete and meet all assessment requirements of this course will receive a national statement of attainment for the following unit:
MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres
A government issued photo identification and valid USI is required for course registration.
All students must undertake a language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy test before commencement of this course to ascertain if support is required to assist you into successfully meeting your goals.
Students must also possess the following:
- Approximately 12 months Industry Experience
- Communicate in a clear manner with others
- Read and Record measurements
- Record information legibly
- Read and comply with work instructions and specifications
- Complete a health and fitness declaration. Please note that students are required to declare any medical issue(s) that may prevent or exclude them from full participation of all units
- The physical capacity to undertake the practical components with this course.
- Wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, safety boots and safety glasses on face-to-face training days
