This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to inspect, maintain and test a range of equipment. It includes inspecting response equipment, testing response equipment and cleaning, maintaining and restowing equipment

The unit applies to personnel who have either a primary role in the maintenance of equipment or are required to test and maintain equipment as part of an operational role.

Students who successfully complete this training course will develop the essential skills, knowledge and competence required to work safely with emergency response equipment. Upon completion of the assessment, participants will have the ability to:

  • Inspect and test response equipment – Conduct thorough inspection and testing of emergency response equipment, height safety equipment, and firefighting devices to ensure workplace safety and compliance.
  • Maintain and test response equipment – Apply systematic procedures to prepare, maintain and test response equipment in accordance with industry standards and organisational procedures.
  • Clean, maintain and restore  equipment – Perform cleaning, maintenance and storage of tested equipment and supplies to ensure operational readiness.
  • Assess equipment competency – Evaluate the safety, functionality and compliance of units of emergency response equipment through practical assessment and inspection protocols.
  • Document maintenance and testing – Complete accurate records of inspection, testing, maintenance and certification activities in accordance with jurisdictional arrangements and statutory requirements.

  • Completion of the prerequisite unit PUAFIR210 – Prevent Injury (must be obtained prior to commencing this course)
  • Approximately 12 months industry experience in emergency response, fire sector, or related high risk industries
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and follow organisational procedures in the workplace

All students must undertake a language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy assessment before commencement of this course to ensure they have the knowledge required to successfully complete the training. They will also show their ability to inspect, test, clean, maintain, and safely store equipment in simulated or workplace settings.
  • Verbal Questioning:
    Students will answer questions verbally to demonstrate their knowledge of equipment procedures, safe practices, and problem-solving in operational scenarios.
  • Combination of the Above:
    A blended assessment approach, combining written, practical, and documented evidence, will ensure students can safely and effectively prepare, maintain, and test response equipment for operational readiness.
