This course consists of one nationally recognised unit: PUAEQU001 Prepare, maintain and test response equipment.

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to inspect, maintain and test a range of equipment. It includes inspecting response equipment, testing response equipment and cleaning, maintaining and restowing equipment

The unit applies to personnel who have either a primary role in the maintenance of equipment or are required to test and maintain equipment as part of an operational role.

Upon successful completion of the Prepare, Maintain and Test Response Equipment Training, students will be able to:

  • Inspect response equipment – Check all equipment for serviceability, defects, and readiness for use.
  • Test response equipment – Conduct functional tests to ensure equipment operates correctly and safely.
  • Clean, maintain and restow equipment – Clean, service, and store equipment so it is maintained and ready for future use.

Upon completing this training course, graduates can pursue roles in emergency response, firefighting, rescue operations, or safety and operational support within resources, infrastructure, and emergency services sectors. This training also provides a foundation for progression into supervisory or specialist operational roles.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Prepare, Maintain and Test Response Equipment Training, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
  • Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.
Student Responsibilities and Practical Requirements
  • Approximately 12 months Industry Experience
  • Access to technology: Reliable internet connection, a computer or device capable of running the training software, and basic skills to operate these technologies (e.g., using a web browser, downloading/uploading files, participating in virtual meetings).
  • Self-motivation and time management: Ability to manage learning schedules independently, meet deadlines, and engage actively without in-person supervision.
  • Basic communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal means, including using email, chat tools, or discussion forums.

The unit of competency PUAFIR210 Prevent injury is a pre-requisite for this training course.

It is essential that the prerequisite unit listed above is obtained prior to the issuance of PUAEQU001 Prepare, maintain and test response equipment.

Mode of Delivery

This unit is delivered through a combination of online self-paced learning and practical workplace application, ensuring students can engage with theoretical content remotely and apply their skills in real-world scenarios. The online component includes interactive modules, readings, and assessments accessible via our Learning Management System (LMS), allowing students to progress at their own pace while adhering to course timeline.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements.

Assessment methods include:

  • Written Responses to Theory Questions:
    Students will complete theory-based questions through the Learning Management System (LMS) to demonstrate their understanding of equipment preparation, maintenance, testing procedures, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Portfolio of Work Samples:
    Students will compile evidence such as inspection checklists, maintenance records, and testing logs to demonstrate the practical application of skills in preparing, maintaining, and testing response equipment. They will also show their ability to inspect, test, clean, maintain, and safely store equipment in simulated or workplace settings.
  • Verbal Questioning:
    Students will answer questions verbally to demonstrate their knowledge of equipment procedures, safe practices, and problem-solving in operational scenarios.
  • Combination of the Above:
    A blended assessment approach, combining written, practical, and documented evidence, will ensure students can safely and effectively prepare, maintain, and test response equipment for operational readiness.
