This training course is comprised of two units of competency:

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

This unit covers the skills and knowledge needed to provide an effective first aid response in accordance with guidelines set by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other national clinical bodies. It includes responding to emergency situations, applying appropriate first aid procedures, communicating details of the incident, and reviewing the response to ensure continuous improvement.

HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) according to Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. It includes responding to emergencies, performing CPR, communicating incident details, and reviewing the response to ensure effective practice.

Upon successful completion of this training course, students will be able to respond effectively to emergency situations by recognising and assessing the situation, ensuring the safety of themselves, bystanders, and the casualty, and seeking assistance from emergency services. They will be able to apply appropriate first aid procedures, including performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, operating an automated external defibrillator (AED), obtaining consent where possible, and using available resources to make the casualty comfortable. Students will monitor the casualty’s condition, display respectful behaviour, and operate first aid equipment correctly. Additionally, students will communicate incident details accurately to emergency services, report and document incidents in line with workplace procedures, maintain privacy and confidentiality, and review the incident to identify improvements in first aid response.

This training course is suitable for anyone who may be required to provide a first aid response in the workplace or community, including employees in high-risk environments, supervisors, team leaders, volunteers, and members of the public who want to develop essential first aid and CPR skills. It is ideal for individuals seeking to ensure the safety and wellbeing of others in emergency situations.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Provide First Aid & CPR Training, students must meet the following entry requirements:

Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.
Complete a Health and Fitness Declaration. Students are required to declare any medical condition(s) that may prevent or limit their ability to safely and fully participate in all units of the course.

Student Responsibilities and Practical Requirements

Possess a laptop or tablet to bring to training sessions.
Maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness to undertake the practical components of the course.
Be physically capable of kneeling and performing uninterrupted CPR on the floor for at least two minutes, repeated multiple times.
Have the ability to kneel, bend, perform chest compressions, and safely assist or move casualties during practical first aid scenarios.
Be able to read and record measurements accurately.
Record information legibly.
Communicate clearly and effectively with others.
Read and comply with work instructions and specifications.
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical activities, including long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and safety glasses on face-to-face training days

The studied units HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation do not have any pre-requisite requirements. Students can enrol directly into Provide First Aid & CPR Training without needing to complete any prior vocational qualifications.

NOTE: All students will be required to pre-read the supplied Leaner Manual and complete the associated online pre-course assessment. This assessment must be 100% completed and provided to Parabellum International Training RTO (51786) prior to commencement of face-to-face training.

Mode of Delivery

The Provide First Aid & CPR Training is delivered through a combination of theoretical and practical components, led by experienced and qualified trainers who maintain current industry knowledge and adhere to best practices in advanced first aid and casualty care.

The course is delivered through a combination of structured learning methods, including:

Face-to-face practical training exercises
Self-paced online learning modules
Practical Activities & Workplace-based training conducted in real or simulated work environments
Blended learning activities, such as workplace simulations and digital assessments integrated with practical demonstrations

This blended approach provides flexibility while ensuring that students develop both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills required to demonstrate competency in the units within the Provide First Aid & CPR Training.

Assessment Methods

Assessments are conducted in an environment that provides realistic, in-depth scenarios and simulations, with all the relevant equipment and resources of the workplace or community setting, to evaluate students’ skills and knowledge. They are carried out by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment—fairness, flexibility, validity, and reliability—and the rules of evidence, ensuring all evidence is valid, sufficient, current, and authentic. Students are assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against each requirement of the unit of competency.

Assessment methods may include:

Direct observation of practical skills and tasks during training exercises
Verbal questioning to assess underpinning knowledge
Written responses to theory-based questions
Portfolio evidence, including completed workplace documents or work samples
A combination of the above methods, as appropriate for each unit
Compression and ventilation skills must be demonstrated on resuscitation manikins following ARC guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures

Evidence Collection

Evidence of competency is gathered throughout the course and may include:

Completion of theory questions through structured learning plans in the Learning Management System (LMS)
Observation checklists completed by the trainer during practical assessments
Submission of portfolio evidence, such as workplace forms, reports, or documentation relevant to unit outcomes

This comprehensive approach ensures all students are assessed fairly, consistently, and in accordance with the units’ requirements of the Provide First Aid & CPR Training.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT)

Parabellum International Training RTO (51786) offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for students who can demonstrate prior skills and experience relevant to the course outcomes. Students may also be eligible for Credit Transfer (CT) for units of competency they have previously completed through another Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

RPL and CT applications are assessed individually in accordance with our RPL/CT Policy and the requirements of the training package.
