PUAFIR305 Respond to Aviation Incidents (General)

Developed by Parabellum International Training (RTO Code: 51786) in consultation with industry, PUAFIR305 Respond to aviation incidents (General) &PUAFIR203 Respond to Urban Fire are nationally recognised units of competency that provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely respond to aviation-related incidents and emergencies and the skills and knowledge required to respond to an urban fire where defensive and offensive strategies are used.

This training is designed for personnel who may be required to respond to aircraft incidents as part of an Emergency Response Team (ERT), particularly within industries where aviation operations form part of normal workplace activities, such as mining, resources, defence, aviation, and remote site operations.

The course focuses on developing the practical capabilities required to identify aviation hazards, apply appropriate response strategies, and operate effectively within a coordinated emergency response. Training includes an understanding of aircraft types, aviation hazards, operational procedures, and the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in responding to aviation incidents.

Participants will engage in a combination of theoretical learning and practical, scenario-based activities designed to reflect real-world emergency situations. This approach ensures participants gain the confidence and practical experience required to contribute effectively to emergency response operations involving aircraft incidents.

This unit can be delivered as a standalone course or as part of a broader emergency response training program and is suitable for individuals, small groups, or organisations seeking to build capability in aviation incident response.

PUAFIR305 Respond to Aviation Incidents is a nationally recognised unit of competency designed for personnel who may be required to respond to aircraft-related emergencies as part of an Emergency Response Team (ERT) or workplace emergency response capability.

This unit reflects the role of individuals who work as members of a non-specialist emergency response team, under supervision, when responding to aviation incidents. It applies to personnel required to respond to aircraft incidents, primarily outside of major domestic and international airports, and is not intended for specialist aviation firefighters.

The course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to recognise aviation hazards, apply appropriate response strategies, and support coordinated emergency response operations involving aircraft incidents. Participants gain an understanding of aircraft-related risks, emergency response procedures, and the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in managing aviation incidents.

Within this context, the fire sector refers to those sections of government departments, statutory authorities, or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.

This course is suitable for personnel working within industries such as mining, resources, defence, aviation support services, and remote site operations, where aircraft movements may occur and personnel may be required to respond to aviation incidents as part of their emergency response duties.

Please note that this course also includes the Delivery of PUAFIR203 – Respond to Urban Fire.

No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PUAFIR305 Respond to aviation incidents

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to work as a member of a non-specialist team, under supervision, when responding to an aviation incident. It applies to personnel required to respond to aircraft incidents, primarily outside of major domestic and international airports, and is not intended for specialist aviation firefighters.

The unit focuses on preparing for and supporting emergency response operations involving aircraft incidents, recognising aviation hazards, and working effectively as part of a coordinated response team.

  • Prepare to respond to an aviation incident.

  • Proceed to and access the aviation incident scene.

  • Identify aviation hazards and implement safe work practices.

  • Support response operations at an aviation incident.

  • Assist with search, rescue, and casualty management where required.

  • Conclude aviation incident response operations.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have developed the knowledge and practical skills required to recognise aviation hazards, apply safe response procedures, and support emergency response operations involving aircraft incidents in accordance with organisational procedures and relevant safety requirements.

Study Pathway

After completing this training, students may choose to progress to broader emergency response qualifications such as the RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue or other nationally recognised units related to firefighting, rescue operations, and emergency incident management.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the PUAFIR305 Respond to Aviation Incidents (General)  Training, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
  • Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 2 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.
  • Complete a Health and Fitness Declaration. Students are required to declare any medical condition(s) that may prevent or limit their ability to safely and fully participate in all units of the course.
  • Provide evidence of attainment for the pre-requisite requirements of this course
Student Responsibilities and Practical Requirements
  • Approximately 12 months industry experience.
  • Possess a Laptop/Tablet which they are able to bring with them on training day.
  • Students must have a reasonable level of physical fitness and be capable of lifting and carrying loads of at least 20 kilograms, working in confined spaces, and performing physically demanding emergency response tasks as part of the practical training and assessment requirements.
  • Can climb stairs and ladders whilst carrying a load.
  • Can manage the mental and physical effects of a fear of heights.
  • Be clean shaven as per AS1715 
  • Communicate in a clear manner with others. 
  • Read and Record measurements.  
  • Record information legibly.  
  • Read and comply with work instructions and specifications.  
  • Wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, safety boots, safety glasses and sun protection on face-to-face training days.

Mode of Delivery

The Respond to Aviation Incidents (General) Training is delivered through a combination of theoretical and practical components, led by experienced and qualified trainers who maintain current industry knowledge in aviation incident response, emergency response, and rescue operations.

The course is delivered through a combination of structured learning methods, including:

  • Workplace-based training conducted in real or simulated work environments
  • Blended learning activities, such as workplace simulations and digital assessments integrated with practical demonstrations

This blended approach provides flexibility while ensuring that students develop both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills required to demonstrate competency in emergency response and rescue operations.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements.

Assessment methods may include:

  • Direct observation of practical skills and tasks during training exercises
  • Verbal questioning to assess underpinning knowledge
  • Written responses to theory-based questions
  • Portfolio evidence, including completed workplace documents or work samples
  • combination of the above methods, as appropriate for each unit
Evidence Collection

Evidence of competency is gathered throughout the course and may include:

  • Completion of theory questions through structured learning plans in the Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Observation checklists completed by the trainer during practical assessments
  • Submission of portfolio evidence, such as workplace forms, reports, or documentation relevant to unit outcomes

This comprehensive approach ensures all students are assessed fairly, consistently, and in accordance with the unit requirements of the Respond to Aviation Incidents (General) Training.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT)

Parabellum International Training RTO (51786) offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for students who can demonstrate prior skills and experience relevant to the course outcomes. Students may also be eligible for Credit Transfer (CT) for units of competency they have previously completed through another Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

RPL and CT applications are assessed individually in accordance with our RPL/CT Policy and the requirements of the training package.
